Who elected Trump?

Saturday, February 04, 2017 2:15:36 PM

The Trump phenomenon has been something of a mystery to most analysts and talking heads in the media. The various post-mortems have been interesting, but most of them get only parts of the story right. I don't know the answers either. Many in the media are wringing their hands now thinking about how the next 4 years are going to transpire -- especially for the media. The news media had at one time a legitimate adversarial position to the people in power, including the President. They brought down Nixon, and held Reagan to a very high standard. However, as we saw when Clinton was in power, they relaxed their standards when one of their own had the White House. Charlie Sykes is billed as a "conservative talk-show host" on Politico accompanying his article "Donald Trump and the Rise of the Alt-Reality Media" (http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/11/donald-trump-conservative-media-charlie-sykes-214483), but his statements in the article sound like they are coming from a life-long leftist. He is seriously worried about people like Alex Jones (somebody who few people take seriously) spreading "fake news", but no mention of leading media outlets like CNN, Washington Post, and New York Times spreading equally fake stories to millions of Americans.

It's well-known that the news media and entertainment industry are both left-leaning, if not outright leftist. A study by the Center for Public Integrity found that 96% of donations in the past Presidential election by media types went to Hillary Clinton:

"In all, people identified in federal campaign finance filings as journalists, reporters, news editors or television news anchors — as well as other donors known to be working in journalism — have combined to give more than $396,000 to the presidential campaigns of Clinton and Trump, according to a Center for Public Integrity analysis.

Nearly all of that money — more than 96 percent — has benefited Clinton: About 430 people who work in journalism have, through August, combined to give about $382,000 to the Democratic nominee, the Center for Public Integrity’s analysis indicates.

About 50 identifiable journalists have combined to give about $14,000 to Trump. (Talk radio ideologues, paid TV pundits and the like — think former Trump campaign manager-turned-CNN commentator Corey Lewandowski — are not included in the tally.)"

The 60's anti-war movement -- a left wing movement -- also called itself an anti-establishment movement. The truth is, it was anti-establishment ONLY in the fact that it did not like the current establishment. They were all about free speech, free love, and guilt-free drug use. There is a theory that the primary objective of the movement was to get someone from their political persuasion to become President and wield the power. They tried with McGovern in 1971, but he was a weak candidate that did not translate well to mainstream voters. Bill Clinton was also from that movement, but after his stint as governor of Arkansas, he became more pragmatic and was able to work with politicians on both sides of the aisle. In fact, most of his major accomplishments were Republican bills that he compromised on, such as welfare reform and balancing the budget. He even proclaimed "the era of Big Government is over", irritating leftists to no end.

Barack Obama was the candidate they had been waiting for. Groomed by Communists and other far-left radicals, he nonetheless put on a "moderate" face to the general public and became the darling of the media. He could do no wrong. In fact, a Google Group of journalists was created to help Obama get elected -- JournoList. It was created by Ezra Klein, a "journalist" for the web site The American Prospect, and later the Washington Post. Among the group were 300 mainstream journalists from every major media outlet, and on the list they discussed burying stories that harmed Obama, and coordinating efforts to destroy or discredit Republicans. They discussed burying the Jerimiah Wright story. (Wright was a far-left radical preacher who was Obama's mentor.) One "journalist", Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent, wrote "If the right forces us all to either defend Wright or tear him down, no matter what we choose, we lose the game they've put upon us. Instead, take one of them – Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares – and call them racists". This is the tactic that supposed "journalists" did during the 2008 election, which in part helped Obama to get elected. The news media as a whole forgave Obama for most of his past, never reported on his failings, and utterly blew up any minor infraction by his opponent. Never before has such an unqualified person become President. A very short stint as a Senator, some state legislative experience, and a job as a community agitator do not make an acceptable resume for President.

In addition to helping him to get elected, for eight years of his administration the media has  treated Obama with kid gloves. They asked him questions like "how does it feel being so awesome." The fudge the numbers to make it look like everything Obama is doing is successful, such as unemployment rates and other economic numbers. They portray him on comedy shows with love. They tell jokes that laugh with the President rather than at him. The way that Trump is depicted makes him look like a fool and a dictator.

The tables are turned now. The arrogance of the media has helped determine the election. People are sick and tired of the left-wing media carrying water for the administration and have revolted against it. Now, the media is in complete opposition to the incoming administration and will go back to being an adversarial force -- even if Trump is successful in what he is trying to accomplish with the economy. We should have a news media that will be the truthtellers about the government, but in order to work it has to work across all administrations, not just the Republican administrations. True journalists should have no allegiance to a politician -- whether that politician is running for office or in office.
